What Hockey Stick and Curve Does Sidney Crosby Use?

Sidney Crosby is the classiest hockey player in the NHL, and he is arguably one of the best hockey players ever to lace them up. Crosby was drafted in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft as the number one overall pick, and at this time, he was sponsored by Reebok but was still using a 2-piece Sherwood hockey stick.

He didn’t change to composite until 2009 during the home opener on October 2nd against the New York Rangers, where he finally started using composite Reebok hockey sticks.

Since then, Reebok no longer makes hockey gear as Adidas purchased Reebok and CCM, but decided to subsidize Reebok and only sell their hockey gear under the CCM brand in 2015.

Although Adidas no longer owns CCM (sold in 2017), Crosby still uses CCM gear today. His 2015 deal was six years, and since then, there’s no information on him signing a new deal, but he is still working with them as he is in numerous CCM promotional videos.

What Kind of Stick Does Sidney Crosby Use?

Sidney Crosby uses the CCM RibCor Reckoner hockey stick, this is what stick he used in the 2022-23 season, and to start off the 2023-2024 NHL season. He was spotted using the CCM Ribcor Trigger 8 Pro hockey stick too in a CCM promo video, it is possible he will start using it very soon.

As we know from Crosby’s past is that he doesn’t love changing things when they work for him or when he likes them, hence why he used the Sherwood 2 piece until 2009.

This means we will likely still see the CCM RibCor Reckoner a bit early on in the 2023-24 season. We already spotted it at the Halifax game where the Pittsburgh Penguins played the Ottawa Senators, and the Buffalo Sabres pre-season game on October 6th.

In the 2023-2024 NHL season, it is very possible that Sidney Crosby will use the new CCM Ribcor Trigger 8 Pro hockey stick. The stick is great for quick-release shots, enhanced puck handling, precision passing, and shooting. It is one of the best hockey sticks on the market today.

Here is everything you need to know about CCM’s Ribcor Trigger 8 Pro stick:

    • Innovative Foam Insert: Located on the heel section of the blade, this feature offers a dampened feel, enhancing stickhandling and passing.
    • Regular Stiffness Toe: Designed for quick and precise shooting, helping players get the puck into the net efficiently.
    • Optimized Low Kickpoint: Facilitates rapid shot releases, ideal for players who prefer a quick pop with each shot.
    • Dual Feel Blade Technology: A combination of the foam insert and the stiffness of the toe, it drastically improves the feel of the blade.
    • Nanolite Shield Technology: Advanced carbon layering techniques are used to decrease the stick’s weight without compromising its durability.

It’s the best stick for players seeking quick releases, a pronounced pop in their shots, and a heightened blade feel.

What Hockey Stick Did Crosby Use As A Rookie?

During Sidney Crosby’s first year in the NHL (2005 and 2006 NHL season) he used a 2 piece Sher-Wood hockey stick. The shaft is called the Sher-Wood Momentum Comp which had a custom “Crosby 87” namebar. The blade was a Sher-Wood 1080 blade and a custom curve similar to what he still uses.

See his rookie stick here!

After his rookie year, he used a few 2 piece hockey sticks, eventually a Reebok shaft, but he always used his Sher-Wood 1080 blade. Then he made the switch to a one-piece composite hockey stick in 2009. This is when he started using Reebok sticks only, until CCM purchased Reebok. Then he continued to use the Ribcor CCM sticks, which was the Reebok version of CCM sticks.

What Curve Does Sidney Crosby Use?

There is a Sidney Crosby curve known as the P29 CCM hockey stick curve, which is what you will find in stores. However, Sidney Crosby uses a custom curve compared to the ones sold in stores, and his custom curve is straighter and has a less open face.

Crosby even said this in a video from “In the Room with the Pittsburgh Penguins”, where he compares his real curve to a kid’s retail P29 curve, saying his own was much straighter.

You can also see the pro-stock Crosby hockey sticks are very different, see the comparison in this photo here on Hockey Circles.

What Flex Stick Does Sidney Crosby Use?

Sidney Crosby is known to use a much higher stick flex than other NHL players, some of his sticks have had a flex between 100 and 110 flex. This means the stick is much more stiff, needing even more power to have it flex to use the whip to your advantage.

“100. Well its a little bit stiffer, and I think just taking faceoffs, and I used a 2 piece prior to that. One of the few guys that had the shaft and blades still when I think I played with that for three of four years, so yeah, I think a lot of younger guys have been used to using one-pieces and are used to probably a little less flex, but Ive always used a bit more of a stiffer stick.” Sidney Crosby

What Color Stick Tape Does Crosby Use?

Sidney Crosby uses black stick tape on his hockey stick blade, it starts higher up on the heel than normal, and finishes just before fully taping around the blade’s toe. Although he used black taope on the blade, he uses white tape on his stick knob.
