Auston Matthews is arguably one of the best goal-scorers to ever play in the NHL. His shot is something every kid dreams about as a hockey player; the quick-release, accurate, hard shot is one-of-a-kind.
Choosing the best hockey stick is extremely important for a sniper like Matthews, but what tool is he using?
What Kind of Stick Does Auston Matthews Use?
Auston Matthews uses the CCM JetSpeed FT6 Pro hockey stick, a stick well-known for players who love to shoot the puck. Matthews prefers a textured grip along with his name bar being “PAPI 34”.
The FT6 has a hybrid kickpoint, meaning the stick’s flex adapts to the type of shot taken. This is a great advantage for Auston Matthews, who frequently shoots from various positions, ensuring maximum power in every situation. Such an adaptive flex profile is designed for players looking for versatility in their shooting, perfect for a diverse shooting style.
Matthews is sponsored by CCM so it is safe to say that Matthews will continue to use a CCM hockey stick, likely he will continue with the JetSpeed models.

What Curve Does Auston Matthews Use?
Auston Matthews uses a tweaked version of the P29 curve, which is equivalent to the P92.
“I’ve used it since I was a young kid, it’s just a regular Sakic curve. I’ve just been pretty comfortable with it I’ve tweaked it a little bit.
The P92 curve features an open face that begins its curve mid-blade and gradually opens towards the tip, making it versatile for shooting, passing, and puck handling. Recognized by various names across brands such as:
- Bauer P92
- CCM P29
- Sher-Wood PP26/PP92
- Warrior P03
- TRUE TC2/TC2.5
- Easton E3
- STX X92
It’s one of the most popular curves in hockey, making it a perfect choice for top level shooters like Matthews.

What Flex Does Auston Matthews Use?
Auston Matthews uses a custom 80 flex to get the perfect amount of whip in his stick for quick and fast snap shots and wrist shots. He is 6 foot 3, so the 80 flex at such a tall height makes for a lot of extra whip.
I like it really whippy so I use like an 80, I don’t take much slap shots mostly just snapshots or just wrist shots
What Color Stick Tape Does Matthews Use?
Auston Matthews uses white tape on his blade and his stick knob. He tapes his stick blade starting on the heel and follows through the toe, where scissors are needed to cut around the toe.
