The transformation of Jack Hughes from a highly anticipated prospect to a cornerstone of the New Jersey Devils offense has been remarkable. Hughes has taken the NHL by storm, showcasing a stunning 43-goal season that firmly places him in the ranks of hockey’s elite.
At the time of writing, he also leads the 2023-24 season in points. It would be great to see him and his brothers light up this league!
As the Devils set their sights on the playoff horizon, Hughes’ blend of speed, skill, and hockey intelligence marks him as a standout player and a driving force behind the team’s resurgence. But what hockey stick is helping him shoot, pass, and score goals?
What Kind of Stick Does Jack Hughes Use?
Jack Hughes is currently using the Bauer Vapor Hyperlite 2 with 77 flex and a custom curve known as the Malkin Pro Curve. This hockey stick matches Hughes’ style of play; its light in weight which makes his quick movements even easier to perform.
The stick is the lightest Vapor yet, as it weighs only 365 grams; this stick is a testament to Bauer’s dedication to innovation with its Advanced Carbon Layering (ACL) 2.0 technology and the new HYP2RCORE blade.
These features are not just about reducing weight—they’re about enhancing playability, allowing for lightning-fast shots without sacrificing durability. Its low kick point works perfectly for Hughes’ need for rapid wrist and snap shots, making the Vapor Hyperlite 2 an extension of his agile gameplay.

Jack has also been seen using the Bauer AG5NT stick, praised for its super-lightweight design at 335 grams and low-kick point ideal for quick shots. The AG5NT, reinforced with Bauer’s TeXtreme technology for optimal strength and durability, supported Hughes’s playstyle before transitioning to the Hyperlite 2.

It’s possible we will see Jack Hughes using the PROTO-R stick in the future too.
It is worth noting NHL players use custom sticks, and what we see them using may be a marketing tactic to show a certain stick. For example, it may be wrapped to look like an AG5NT, but it could be a HYPERLITE, vice versa.

What Curve Does Jack Hughes Use?
Jack Hughes uses a P88 with a custom bend at the toe, also known as the Malkin Pro Curve. The bend makes all the difference to this curve, making it much bigger of a curve. Profile look the toe shape is slightly different, but for the most part, it looks very similar. This curve doesn’t open its face at all until past half way on the blade.
The customizations help him with his stickhandling and shooting.

What Flex Does Jack Hughes Use?
Jack Hughes uses a 77 flex hockey stick cut down, so it is about 81-flex. At this flex, Hughes’ stick strikes a balance between rigidity and flexibility, providing the necessary resistance for his powerful shots while allowing enough give for that extra whip on his release. This middle-of-the-road flex is a popular choice among players who are looking for an optimal blend of power and quickness in their shots.
He said his stick flex in an NHL “Whats Your Stick Flex Rating?” video:
77 but like cut down, so probably like a 81. Just not that big, its a good flex for me. Nothing to crazy about it. – Jack Hughes
What Color Stick Tape Does Jack Hughes Use?
He uses white tape for both his blade and the knob of his stick. The white tape on the blade is a classic choice that offers a clean look against the ice, possibly helping Hughes keep a better visual on the puck. Wrapping his blade from the heel, Hughes ensures full tape coverage for optimal stick control, helping pick up pucks.

With his Bauer Vapor Hyperlite 2 in hand, the NHL can expect to witness more of the electrifying performances that are quickly becoming the “norm” of Hughes’ superstar career.
