After watching Connor McDavid throw up 153 points in the 2022-23 season you may be wondering about some of the gear he is using. He is such a quick puck handler and can release the puck so quickly.
Yes, it is quite obvious that his speed is what sets him apart from other hockey players but the way he can control the puck at that speed is what makes him so talented.
What tool is he using to handle the puck the way he does?
What Kind of Stick Does Connor McDavid Use?
Connor McDavid uses the CCM JetSpeed FT6 Pro hockey stick, which is an extremely light and durable hockey stick known for its hybrid kick point. McDavid uses the black JetSpeed FT6 Pro stick, which is black carbon fiber with visible grey CCM logos and wording. McDavid used to use the CCM SuperTacks stick before he made the switch to the JetSpeed FT5 Pro, now he is using the latest model.

Key Features of the CCM Jetspeed FT6 Pro Stick:
- Hybrid Kick Point: The Jetspeed FT6 Pro stick features a Hybrid Kick Point designed to bridge the gap between a lightning-fast shot release and maximized power. This design incorporates a highly stiff flex zone between two softer flex zones, creating a hinge-like effect within the s
- Skeleton+ Technology: Building on the legacy of CCM stick models, the FT6 Pro stick harnesses Skeleton+ technology. This consistent manufacturing method produces a lighter stick feel and ensures heightened reliability during crucial game moments.
- Nanolite Carbon Layering and Shield Technology: The Jetspeed FT6 Pro integrates Nanolite Carbon Layering in its shaft—a high-performance layering technology combined with enhanced Sigmatex Spread Tow carbon (carbon weave). This design not only provides a significant boost to the stick’s lightness, responsiveness, and resilience but also benefits from the Nanolite Shield technology. This reengineered shaft design is optimized with thicker carbon fiber layering, safeguarding the ultra-light core and achieving a notable weight reduction without compromising durability.
- FT Microfeel Grip: Unique to the FT6 Pro, CCM introduces the FT microfeel grip, a raised grip added to the bottom edges of the shaft’s mid-section, ensuring a superior feel and control during gameplay.
- RR-100 Blade with Nanolite Technology: The FT6 Pro stick showcases an upgraded blade—the RR-100 Blade with nanolite technology. As the lightest stiff blade from CCM, it offers unparalleled shot speed and control, further enhancing the stick’s overall balance and handling.
- R-Geometry Shape: Staying consistent with their design philosophy, CCM retains the R-Geometry shape for the Jetspeed FT6 Pro stick. Featuring rounded edges, concave sides, and a streamlined shape, this stick ensures unmatched comfort—a design highly favored by pro players.
- Custom Color Options: Exclusive to the FT6 Pro sticks, CCM offers players the option to choose from a range of colors, including chrome, red, blue, and green.

What Curve Does Connor McDavid Use?
The curve Connor McDavid uses when he plays is different than the P28 curve listed on CCM sticks you’ll find at the sports stores. Connor McDavids curve is a custom curve, it is similar to the CCM Lecavalier curve with a bit more curve on the toe, almost like a modified P92 curve.
He uses a smaller blade that is thinner than usual, he uses a mid curve, the curve opens more towards the end of the toe and slightly in the middle of the blade. The toe of the blade is actually more squared than most blades, this is known to be helpful picking up passes on the boards but also it helps Connor during faceoffs.
McDavid’s curve is a great option for shooting the puck anywhere off the blade, great for accuracy, and picking up hard passes on both forehand and backhand.
McDavid said in a Sportsnet interview that he has been using the same curve since he was a kid, this means he was likely using an Iginla and moved on to a Lecavalier.

What Flex Does Connor McDavid Use?
Connor McDavid uses an 85 flex hockey stick cut down a small amount, this makes it anywhere between 85 and 95 flex. This is pretty stiff compared to some low flex options available.
Connor himself said it was pretty stiff, mentioning how he isn’t a big shooter and enjoys carrying the puck a little bit more. This isn’t hard to tell as he is (in my opinion) one of the best puck handlers the NHL has ever had.
What Length is Connor McDavid’s Hockey Stick?
He said himself he constantly is changing the height, minor changes testing out things constantly trying to give him an edge from game to game.
However, in most photos his stick is up to his chin when he is on skates and it is around his nose when off the ice, so he uses a standard hockey stick length.

What Color Stick Tape Does McDavid Use?
McDavid uses white hockey stick tape on his blade. He typically tapes it from the heel of the blade and completely around the toe of the blade. Connor mentioned himself that he does change how far up the heel he tapes and other minor changes regularly to see what gives him an edge.
On the top, the stick knob, McDavid uses a bit of grip tape and some white tape on the bottom, the very top knob is slightly thicker which is a common stick knob tape job that prevents the stick from slipping out of your hands.
