The New York Islanders joined the National Hockey League in 1972 as an expansion team. The Islanders have some notable alumni in Mike Bossy, Pat LaFontaine and John Tavares. Being a relatively new team, the Islanders have enjoyed a decent amount of success as a team, but how many Stanley Cups have the New York Islanders won?

The New York Islanders have won 4 Stanley Cups during their time in the NHL. Islanders fans did not have to wait long to see their team find success, as they went on a four-year run from 1980-1983 in which they won all 4 of their Cups. 

Stanley Cup Finals 1980: New York Islanders vs Philadelphia Flyers

This year was the beginning of a bonafide dynasty team that was headlined by the likes of center Bryan Trottier, winger Mike Bossy and defenseman Denis Potvin. Goalie Billy Smith was also an essential member of this team. New York beat Philadelphia in 6 games, winning both of the overtime games in Game 1 and Game 6.

Trottier won the Conn Smythe Trophy, scoring 12 goals and adding 17 assists in the playoffs. In the Finals, Trottier had 4 goals and 4 assists. The star of the series for New York, however, was Mike Bossy, who had 4 goals and 7 assists.

Potvin also added 5 goals and 4 assists with other notable performances from winger Clark Gillies (2 G, 6 A) and defenseman Stefan Persson (3 G, 4 A). Billy Smith played in all 6 games and allowed 23 goals.

Stanley Cup Finals 1981: New York Islanders vs Minnesota North Stars

Returning to the Finals for the second time, the roster essentially remained the same. Islanders center Butch Goring played outstanding in the playoffs with 10 goals and 10 assists, earning himself the Conn Smythe.

Mike Bossy led the playoffs in points (35), and he also tied Trottier in assists (18). Bossy also tied Minnesota’s Steve Payne for goals in the playoffs with 17. The Islanders were able to defeat the North Stars in 5 games. Bossy had 4 goals and 4 assists in the Finals with Trottier scoring 2 goals and adding 5 assists.

Goring scored 5 goals and added 2 assists. Other notable performances came from Potvin (2 G, 4 A) and young winger John Tonelli (5 A). Billy Smith again played every game, allowing 16 goals on 141 shots against.

Stanley Cup Finals 1982: New York Islanders vs Vancouver Canucks

This time around, Bossy was able to earn his first Conn Smythe, scoring a playoff-high 17 goals and adding 10 assists. Trottier led the playoffs in points (29) and assists (23). The Islanders were able to sweep the Vancouver Canucks with Billy Smith coming through with a clutch overtime win in Game 1 and a shutout in Game 3.

Smith allowed 10 goals on 112 shots against. Denis Potvin led the team in points with 2 goals and 7 assists. Bossy added an impressive 7 goals and 1 assist. Trottier had 1 goal and 6 assists with Persson dishing out another 5 assists for New York.

Stanley Cup Finals 1983: New York Islanders vs Edmonton Oilers

In their final Cup run, the Islanders found themselves matched up against Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, what would end up being another dynasty. This time, however, the Islanders rounded out their dynasty in style with a sweep over the Oilers.

Billy Smith was the recipient of the Conn Smythe this year, going 13-3 with a 2.69 goals allowed average. Bossy again led the playoffs with 17 goals, but Gretzky finished with the points (38) and assists (26) totals. Smith allowed only 6 goals in the Finals against 128 shots.

Bossy had 2 goals and 2 assists, and Trottier added 1 goal and 3 assists. The Islanders were boosted by some outstanding play by young winger Duane Sutter (2 G, 5 A), defenseman Ken Morrow (3 G, 2 A) and young center Brent Sutter (3G, 2A).
